HTM 5024 International Service Management

Instructor: Dr. Mahmood A. Khan

This course deals with an overview of the issues in the international business environment facing multinational service firms in the hospitality and tourism/service industries.  These issues include such topics as: global strategy formulation and implementation; technology challenges; diversity in customers and employees; political and legal concerns; and effective organizational structures for long term survival.  It provides an overview of international management practices in the service industries. Different aspects of international services management will be examined. Issues such as the decisions for international expansion, factors regarding the international environment, and functional areas of management pertaining to multi-national corporations will be addressed. Specifically, developments in different regions of the world as related to the service industries will be identified and global services management will be emphasized.  This course also provides for evaluation of services in businesses in National Capital Region.  Quality of services and its measurement, consumer reaction to services, management’s role in providing services, management consumer relationship, excellence in services, consumer demand and expectations for services, are some of the examples of topics covered in this course.  Guest speakers and visits to service organizations are arranged when possible. 

HTM 5464 Franchising in Hospitality Management

This course deals with the Role of franchising in hospitality management.  Contemporary issues related to franchising in different segments of service industry, including franchise concept development, franchisor-franchisee relationship, franchise agreements, operational problems, and international franchising are covered.  Students select a franchise for the entire semester and discuss in detail its management.  Guest speakers are invited to represent franchisor and franchisee points of view.  At the end of the course students should be able to:

  • Understand the role of franchising as a rapidly growing method of doing business.
  • Outline changes and trends in franchising and its impact on the overall management decisions.
  • Develop a perspective on franchising by in-depth analyses of selected franchise corporations.
  • Develop an understanding of the significance of the franchise concept in the success or failure of an operation.
  • Understand the impact of franchising on international expansion of business concepts.

HTM 5514 Contemporary Problems in the Hospitality Industry

This course involves consideration and analysis of relevant industry problems and issues facing management personnel in the hospitality industries.  It is designed to provide students with an understanding of the contemporary problems facing hospitality managers and to extrapolate the trends to overall service industry.  Students will learn the use of content analysis, environmental screening, data analysis and interpretation of information in order to trace future trends.  Management skills, particularly those related with communication, stress management and problem solving will be discussed in relation to contemporary problems and their resolutions.  Students will be working problems related to the trends in the service industries.
